ESPN CBB analyst Seth Greenberg joined Jake Crain on The JBoy Show’s Sept. 1 episode to discuss decisions made around the pandemic, recruiting, SEC growth and the consequences of cheating.
JBoy opened the conversation by talking about one of today’s hottest topics — the pandemic. Seth Greenberg emphasized that the canceling of spring tournaments was not just the right decision but the only decision.
“At certain times, unfortunately, there are things much more important than athletics,” stated Greenberg. “Right now, people need to understand and learn to be comfortable being uncomfortable. People need to learn to put on a mask, practice social distancing, have discipline and they need to make the decisions because a bad decision could impact your loved ones . . . if you want to get back to some kind of normalcy be comfortable being uncomfortable.”
As for how the pandemic has affected recruiting, Greenberg pointed out that technology has always been a part of the process. However, virtual visits are the big thing right now because “necessity is the mother of invention. If you can’t get a kid on campus, you have to take the campus to the prospect,” he said.
Technology has allowed the schools to do this, but being physically present and seeing the interactions of the player with the coach and the other players is harder to access virtually, Greenberg noted. Still, recruiters have utilized technology to continue doing what they have to do for the future of players and teams.
Greenberg also talked about the growth of the SEC. Teams in the conference have hired new coaches, built new facilities, invested in infrastructure and increased marketing. There are some great coaches in the conference, along with world-class universities investing in what matters to strengthen the conference.
Seeing this growth as a positive, Greenberg points out that “there’s a difference between having a basketball team and a basketball program. You can have a basketball team, but if you want to have a basketball program, you have to make an investment.”
Next, JBoy mentioned violations that have recently been reported, which took the conversation towards cheating. Greenberg was clear that while the rules are in place, they should be followed. Cheating is not a victimless crime but impacts those who are abiding by the rules, Greenberg said, noting that it doesn’t matter if players like or dislike the rules, everyone should play on a level playing field.
“The show was great, the game was even better,” said Greenberg in reference to the latest Auburn game against Kentucky. Auburn has created an incredible atmosphere and enthusiasm. Of course, whenever Greenberg watches a game, he watches not as a fan but as a coach, he said. After all, he has 34 years of coaching behind him. He’s looking for the hows, whys and adjustments as well as what he would and wouldn’t do. A lot is going through his mind every time he watches a game.
