3 People Steal $450,000 Worth Of Colonoscopes From Lankenau Medical Center, Police Say

WYNNEWOOD, Pa. (CBS) -- Police in Lower Merion Township say three people stole $450,000 worth of colonoscopes from Lankenau Medical Center on Saturday. The theft was reported around 7:30 a.m. on Monday.

Lower Merion Township police say two men and a woman broke into a secured area in the hospital and removed numerous Olympus Colonoscopes. Two doors were pried open and the men made off with the medical tools. Police say the woman served as a lookout.

Police are concerned the stolen equipment may now be on the black market. The stolen items are worth approximately $450,000.

According to the World Health Organization, colonoscopes "are used for the removal of foreign bodies, excision of tumors or colorectal polyps (polypectomy), and control of hemorrhage."

Police say it's too early to rule if this is an inside job, but they are following leads.

"In my experience, I would say, and just thinking about it logically, you would think that this would not be something the average person would know what it is and where it is kept," said Lower Merion Township Police Detective Sgt. Michael Vice.

Police say the suspects drove off in a newer model, dark-colored Jeep Wrangler, with a hard top.
