There’s been a lot of talk in the media about crime statistics and trends lately, but maybe we need to shift the focus a bit. Instead of pointing the finger solely at society or law enforcement, let's take a closer look at how effectively prosecutors are handling these cases. After all, they play a crucial role in bringing criminals to justice and ensuring public safety. Let's start a conversation about the importance of prosecutorial effectiveness in combating crime. #ProsecutorialEffectiveness #CrimePrevention #PublicSafety

A Metropolitan Police initiative which uses a digital triage approach to identify and maximise the potential of digital evidence in stalking, domestic abuse and sexual offences cases has led to investigation times cut by 75% and a 96% conviction rate for cases going to court – prompting calls for the same approach to be used more widely, as Policing Insight’s Sarah Gibbons reports. ❝The challenge arises in volume crime, where you have a single detective progressing multiple crime reports and very quickly the digital analytics required across a whole department adds up.❞ ❝How do you turn digital investigation from something which is slowing things down, to something which is not only speeding up the process, but helping arrive at better outcomes?❞ - DCI Daniel Thompson, Operation Atlas ❝The key thing here is time. An investigator could spend hours overlaying data, looking for patterns and forming an investigative strategy around that, and trying to convey their interpretation of the data as part of the case file.❞ - DCI Daniel Thompson, Operation Atlas ❝For those cases which have had a judicial disposal, we’ve seen a 96% conviction rate, and a 92% guilty plea rate. Both those findings are important, but if you focus on the guilty plea rate, that’s 92% of victims not having to give evidence at trial.❞ - DCI Daniel Thompson, Operation Atlas ❝The approach we used in Atlas, of triaging crime, a team who are experienced in obtaining digital data, the software capabilities to process that data and the end product witness statement – all of that can be translated to any policing environment.❞ - DCI Daniel Thompson, Operation Atlas [SUBSCRIBER ARTICLE] https://lnkd.in/egZgSTHG #lawenforcement #poliicng #police #investigation #digitalevidence #domesticabuse #stalking #sexualoffences

It’s clear that the youth justice system isn’t deterring young offenders from committing crimes, and isn’t delivering justice for victims. ACT would lower the age of eligibility for youth court so 17 year olds committing adult crimes face adult consequences. ACT’s policy is one step towards tackling out of control youth crime and creating a safer society.

The frequency of threats and violence against police officers is a growing concern in our society. It is crucial to equip officers with the ability to assess potential risks before engaging with individuals. By providing officers with information regarding a person's violent tendencies or previous threats against law enforcement, we can effectively prevent the tragic loss of life or serious injuries. The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI)'s NCIC Violent Person's File (VPF) is a vital resource containing the names and pertinent details of individuals who have either been convicted of violence against police officers or have expressed an intention to commit such acts. When conducting an NCIC Wanted Persons Query, the VPF is automatically searched, serving as a valuable tool. However, the effectiveness of the VPF relies heavily on the information it contains. To ensure that the VPF remains a reliable and comprehensive resource, it is essential for law enforcement agencies to actively contribute information on individuals who have made threats against police officers or have been convicted of violence against them. By doing so, we can strengthen this database, providing law enforcement officers with an even more powerful tool in their mission to maintain public safety. For further information or training on the VPF, please reach out to the FBI's CJIS Division, NCIC Operations and Policy Unit at 1-877-324-6242 (Toll-Free) or via email at ncictraining@fbi.gov. Together, let us work towards creating a safer environment for our dedicated law enforcement officers through continually improving the NCIC Violent Person's File (VPF).

The University of South Florida will begin collecting statewide Human Trafficking #data. This is an effort to help merge the data into a more comprehensive analysis to better determine the number of human trafficking victims in Florida and what parts of the state have the highest concentrations. Why? Human Trafficking data is currently spread and siloed between tiplines, law enforcement agencies, interventions from the Department of Children and Families, and Department of Health documentation for people seeking treatments and services. To complicate things further, what some organizations consider a victim of human trafficking isn't consistent across the board. Need training on how to report #humantrafficking in #NIBRS #Contactus at https://lnkd.in/gi8H7gaK to find out how we can help. https://lnkd.in/g5caZ6CY #lawenforcementagencies #lawenforcementtraining #policedepartments #lawenforcementofficer #lawenforcementagency

Former Police and Crime Commissioner for Lancashire and National Lead Commissioner for Technology and Digital. Currently seeking strategic advisory or development roles in policing, digital and tech, HE, or local gov.
Today I published the independent report into the Nicola Bulley missing from home investigation. You can read my statement and the report below - and view an extract from the press conference held today at this link. “First and foremost I hope today’s report reassures Nicola’s family that Lancashire Constabulary carried out a professional and extensive investigation and despite important learnings highlighted in the report, none of these actions would have changed the outcome of this tragic case. “This review offers best practice in how high-profile cases can be best investigated and communicated under such spotlight and scrutiny, highlighting the importance of leadership command structures, declaration of critical incidents and resilience within police communications. “Whilst the investigation into Nicola’s disappearance was found to be well handled and resourced, the media narrative was lost at an early stage, which had a detrimental impact on Nicola’s family and friends, and also the confidence of the wider community. Opportunities for non-reportable media briefings on her medical history and vulnerabilities, or sharing her status as a high-risk missing person were not taken. “This was always intended as a learning review and as the public’s voice in policing in Lancashire, I will hold the Chief Constable to account for producing an action plan against the recommendations in this report, to ensure we are delivering policing that is efficient and effective for the communities we serve. “Whilst there is learning for Lancashire, the report draws out a significant amount of best practice and recommendations for wider learning to police forces nationally, particularly around the relationship between the police and the media, which needs to be strengthened for everyone’s benefit. “I would like to thank the College of Policing for their meticulous work in compiling this review, together with the operational and subject matter experts that contributed. I would also like to thank officers and staff within Lancashire Constabulary who worked tirelessly throughout this investigation, and despite the pressures and distractions, remained focussed on finding Nicola. “This report concludes what has been a long and painful process for Nicola’s friends and family and I would ask that their privacy is respected whilst they to continue to grieve for their loss.” https://lnkd.in/dYpSDRqw
